A waiter has sparked a debate after sharing a receipt exposing a customer’s tip.
The Applebee’s server is now being accused of ‘tip shaming’ the customer who could not afford to pay the 20 percent gratuity.
Applebee’s usually suggests an 18 to 20 percent tip, NY Post reported, but one customer explained that ‘holidays are just rough right now’ and he couldn’t give the full 20 percent.
The waiter then took to TikTok and shared a video of the receipt that showed the amount the customer had left.
“You was great. Holidays are just rough right now,” a note read with a sad face next to it.
The TikToker, who goes under the username @kingj24_, also added the song ‘Oh No’ by Capone-N-Noreaga to indicate his dissatisfaction.
“Your thoughts?” he wrote in the video.
Many TikTokers sided with the customer, with one commenting: “Tips aren’t mandatory. They left a note. Be understanding. You chose this line of work. Roll with the up’s and downs with waitressing. That’s life.”
Another wrote: “I read this on Google and I instantly came here to say, no one owes yo anything except your employer. You’re paid to do your job, and people pay for.”
A third said: “I think that family enjoyed a nice dinner out and still tipped. They didn’t owe anyone that explanation. Y’all be mad at the wrong people.”
Someone who previously worked as a waiter added: “Someone who use to be a waiter. I’d be perfectly happy with that tip. Just because the food is a tad more expensive. Did you really do that much more?”
Another said: “It’s a low tip, but it’s still a tip. Calling out customers like this is wrong.”
