The Duke and Duchess of Sussex believed that the Firm was against them during their time as working royals.
While there were numerous causes that contributed to their decision to step down from their royal duties, the release of a sweet photo served as a ‘wake up call’ for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, royal author Andrew Morton claims.
Before the couple announced that they were stepping down from their royal duties, they reportedly believed that the ‘entire constitution’ were ‘conspiring against them.’
This belief reached its boiling point when the Royal Family shared an official photograph which showed the late Queen, King Charles, Prince William and Prince George.
The photo was taken in the throne room at Buckingham Palace and was released only days before the Sussexes made their Megxit announcement.
The official portrait lined up the future of the monarchy and simply mirrors other historic pictures which have also shown the monarch and direct heirs.
But the royal author claimed the image caused some problems in the palace.
Morton wrote in his book Meghan: A Hollywood Princess: “The royal couple suspected that the entire institution was conspiring against them. As they saw it, the evidence was all around them.
“The unspoken code was straightforward: the future of the monarchy was assured, with or without Meghan and Harry.”
Morton also claimed that the fears were confirmed when the Duke of Sussex canceled a meeting with his late grandmother, in which he’d wanted to talk about his future as a member of the Royal Family.
“This sense that, despite their international popularity, they were low down the royal totem pole was confirmed when Harry arranged to meet the Queen for a grandson-to-grandmother chat in early January.
“At the last minute the meeting was postponed.”
