Walmart is now securing steaks in locked metal cages to prevent people from stealing it amid rising crime rates across the US.
In the viral video shared by Michael Fromhold from Florida, high-priced steaks at his local Walmart had been kept inside cages, leaving viewers in utter shock.
The customer took to TikTok and shared a video of it, gaining over four million views in just a few days.
Many TikTokers were stunned as such measures have been implemented.
“You gotta be kidding me,” Michael said in a video as he showed the Angus beef wrapped in metal chains.
“Walmart now has the steak locked up. Holy s*** it’s come to this. This is getting bad.”
It is not clear whether the metal cages are being used in all Walmart stores across the US or not, or whether the company is only implementing such measures in stores located in areas with rising crime rates.
People were quick to share their disappointment and sock over the safety measures, with one writing: “Sorry to say, it’ll only get worse as inflation continues to rise and food shortages start to impact us.”
Another wrote: “I don’t know which is worse – the fact that it’s locked up or that it’s almost $21.”
A third said: “How are we supposed to get that thing off? They only have two employees in the whole store and we have to check out ourselves.”
Someone else added: “I’m not surprised with all the backpack jokes on here. I worked retail for many years and had regular thieves just as much as customers.”
Another commented: “I used to work at a grocery store and people would steal meat all the time I felt so bad when they got caught imagine having to steal food.”
