Whoopi Goldberg has been slammed by viewers after she criticized Gen Z and millennials ‘who only want to work 4 hours’ a day.
During The View’s Hot Topics segment on November 8, the panelists talked about the current conditions of the economy in America that prevent people from starting a family or buying a house.
Alyssa Farah Griffin described her generation as ‘the generation of the housing crisis, financial crisis, and 9/11.’
Goldberg then said: “Every generation comes and wants to do better than their parents did. Every generation.
“But I’m sorry. If you only want to work four hours, it’s gonna be harder for you to get a house.”
She went on: “I feel for everybody that feels this but I’m sorry, we busted our behinds. We had to bust our behinds because we didn’t have the option of going back.”
When Griffin said that millennials are the first generation that are more likely to do ‘worse’ than their parents, Goldberg responded: “You know what? That’s what they said to us as well.
“Every generation is told, ‘You’re gonna do worse than your parents.’”
Goldberg went on and offered life advice to those who are still struggling: “And you know what? People pick it up and they do what they do and they raise themselves and this is what you gotta do. It’s called being a good citizen.”
Viewers were quick to disagree with Goldberg and claimed that she was not aware of the reasons why younger generations are struggling.
One person wrote: “Whoopi went full Boomer on this episode! It really is a very different situation right now for younger generations. I see it and feel it. I’m in my later 50’s. Something has to happen with wages matching the surge in living expenses and housing costs.”
Another said: “Oh boy. I’ve normally agreed with her or sometimes I give her a pass, but Whoopi’s comment was way out of line. It IS harder and so many people work long hours and it’s hard to see her basically call us all lazy. Her generation had it easier and if she can’t realize that.”
A third added: “Whoopi is so out of touch sometimes it is truly depressing.”
