Prince William and Princess Kate showed rare PDA during their three-day trip to Boston, and a body language expert has said that the sweet gesture signaled their support for each other amid faint booing.
The Prince and Princess of Wales went to the TD Garden stadium and cheered for the Boston Celtics, standing up when a semi-finalist of season 10 The Voice sang the national anthem The Star Spangled Banner.
But when the couple were introduced by a stadium announcer, they were met with boos around the arena.
Photos of William and Kate inside the arena showed the Princes of Wales placing a hand on her husband’s knee.
They were also seen holding hands in what body language expert Judi James described as a ‘subliminal need for support.’
Speaking to the Mirror, Judi said: “Kate and William’s show-stopping ‘touch and clutch’ gesture at the basketball might have defined them brand-wise as a close, romantic and rather sexy couple to people in the US.
“But to those of us back in the UK who know how rare this level of PDA is for the couple, there is a hint that the current crisis might have created a subliminal need for support and encouragement for William in particular.”
When Kate placed a hand on William’s thigh, he responded by placing his hand over hers and holding it in a way that shows gratitude for her support.
Judi also said that Kate showed her fun side and the royal couple seemed to pretend not to her the boos.
“At the basketball though Kate in particular looked keen to show her fun, relaxed and low-status side, dropping her regal elegance and sitting in various poses to look like a normal young woman enjoying the game,” she said.
The Princess of Wales laughed with her mouth open when they appeared on the screen.
“The couple did hear them (boos) they seem to have tried to pretend they didn’t, with just those tactile moments suggesting a silent need for some mutual support.”
