A woman has shared her boss’ brutal response after she asked for an emergency day off so she could see her grandfather.
Jenna explained that her grandfather had fallen down the stairs and suffered a collapsed lung and broken ribs.
But she was left gobsmacked by her boss’ reply even after she mentioned that they ‘don’t know how long’ her grandpa has left.
Jenna shared a screenshot of the message she sent to her boss after her grandpa suffered serious injuries from a fall.
Her text read: “Hi, I just got a call from my mum. My grandpa fell and is in the hospital with broken ribs and a collapsed lung. She said she doesn’t know how long he might be around for and I’d like to go visit him tomorrow when he’s awake.
“If you absolutely need me to open the shop tomorrow, I’m happy to as long as I can leave by 8:30. If you won’t be in before then, I’ll need to take tomorrow off. I’m sorry for the late notice, my mum just called me.”
But her boss heartlessly replied: “That’s not going to work.”
Another text from Jenna’s boss read: “We are a week before Christmas. Don’t bother coming in.”
Jenna presumed the message meant she was fired. “Guess I’m looking for a new job,” she posted on Reddit.
Many were quick to share their thoughts on the matter, with one person saying: “Please stop offering so much information to employers. Just a simple, ‘I have a family emergency and cannot come in tomorrow’ and leave it at that. ‘None of this, I can come in until 8:30, my grandpa fell, etc. This is not helpful.”
Another wrote: “Don’t do this. He never said you were fired, if you don’t show up, then that’s grounds for termination.”
