A woman has sparked a divisive debate as she revealed she wants to remain child-free for life while insisting having babies was selfish.
24-year-old Chandler Carter from New York is a young woman who is child-free by choice due to her beliefs. While the social media manager admitted to growing up thinking becoming a mother was a step in life that all women should take, she eventually decided to follow the example of child-free women after seeing them thriving in the modern world.
As Carter explained, she wants to enjoy her freedom and spend her time traveling and eating outside rather than be tied down to caring for children.
She further provoked a response by claiming it was selfish of people to have children while insisting many only do so to make a “mini me” or prove themselves as good parents.
“I want to be child-free. You can be happy. I’d rather regret not having children than having a child and regretting the role of being a mom,” Chandler says.
“I don’t fault people for having children but the reasons are selfish. People want to be a better parent than theirs were or because they want a ‘mini me.’ Having a child is inherently selfish.”
The young lady also explained she was adamant about becoming a mother until she got into college and saw that motherhood wasn’t a necessity for being happy.
“I’d convinced myself I wanted two to three kids. I saw women thriving in their careers and who were child-free. I saw all these possibilities,” she added.
“I’m in my 20s living in New York City. We go out, we have fun. We spend money frivolously. I can go to happy hour after work. I don’t have to cook if I don’t want to. I’m a big foodie, I love to eat out.
“Sometimes I spend a little too much money on dinner and drinks but I don’t feel bad. My cost of living is cheaper. I only provide for me. If I were to have children, living in New York wouldn’t be an option. Things in my life would have to change – sacrifices I wouldn’t want to make.”
