A young woman has gone the extra length to avoid paying additional baggage fees after it was revealed she exceeded the weight allowance.
Gel Rodriguez, who is from the Philippines, was at an airport when she was told by the airline staff that she would have to pay an additional fee because her carry-on baggage exceeded the allowed weight of 15.4 pounds by 4.5 pounds.
To avoid the hefty weight fee while keeping all of her clothes, the woman took out all of her clothes and wore them one by one in multiple layers.
“When the airline staff at the check in counter said ‘Only seven kilos is allowed in hand luggage.’ Me: ‘No problem,’” Gel proudly wrote as she shared a photo showing her wearing dozens of pieces of clothing on the internet.
After her story went viral, Gel also spoke to VICE to open up about her reasoning and double down on her decision to get sweet revenge on the airline staff who tried to make extra money at her expense.
“I didn’t want to pay the fee for the excess baggage because it was only two kilograms 4.5 lbs,” the young lady said.
“If I had known it would go viral, I would have posed better.”
While she definitely saved some money, Gel doesn’t advise other people to follow in her footsteps because “it was really hot” wearing all those clothes for several hours.
As it happens, Gel is far from being the first person to use this ‘life hack’ to cut baggage fees while traveling by plane.
After the photo and the story went viral, thousands of people praised the idea while hundreds claimed to have done this in the past to avoid unreasonably high traveling costs.
“I’ve done this too, wore about 40 pcs of clothing and save over a hundred bucks in the process. A bit embarrassing but definitely worth it,” someone said.
“I wish I did this, I ended up throwing some of my things in the trash bin. What a pity,” another recalled.
A third suggested: “I will try this next week when I fly abroad!”
