A woman lost a small fortune to be with whom she believed to be a Stranger Things star.
McKala is a single mom from Kentucky who thought she was in a relationship with Netflix actor Dacre Montgomery, who played Billy in Stranger Things, after the pair began exchanging romantic texts.
Despite never meeting the man in person or talking to him over the phone, McKala was convinced she was dating the real actor for almost a year.
In hopes that she could be with Montgomery following her failed marriage, the amateur actress sent her crush $10,000 in gift cards and other gifts.
Their romance, however, was over around a year into their dating after McKala realized that the man she was so in love with likely isn’t the Australian actor.
“I’m suspicious from the get-go, until he starts doing things that make me believe he is who he is,” the single mom said as she appeared on Catfished.
“He was venting to me after a few months about his partner, saying she is very controlling of him. He doesn’t get to do the things he wants to do. She’s always there. She’s always got to supervise. I kind of empathize with that because my ex-husband was that way.”
McKala went on to say she was convinced to believe that the fake Dacre broke up with his model girlfriend Liv Pollock to be with her after he said they only remained together officially to keep up with their public appearances.
While the young woman remained suspicious of the fact that the two never talked over the phone or saw each other on video, she said she was convinced she was dating the real deal when he shared poems similar to those the real-life actor wrote in his book.
She also said her crush had told her to watch out for something specific in episode four of season four of Stranger Things before the 4th season was even out.
For these reasons, McKala didn’t doubt a word her new boyfriend had said. She also didn’t hesitate to come to his aid when he requested financial help saying his controlling girlfriend blocked his access to his funds.
It wasn’t until she had sent some $10,000 to the faker that McKala finally realized something was wrong.
After joining Catfished, the mother found out the scammer had sent her a fake check in an attempt to convince her he was the real deal. The Catfished team also told her there was plenty of evidence of the real Montgomery still being in a relationship with Pollock.
“Love makes you do crazy, stupid, irrational things. If you’re someone like me, you’re afraid of abandonment and you’re a real big people pleaser and you’re very co-dependent… These scammers, they just kind of come in and they leech off that,” McKala concluded.
