A young woman asked the internet for advice after her in-laws reduced her to tears with their demands.
The 20-year-old lady in question explained that she and her husband were invited to her sister-in-law’s Thanksgiving dinner only for the relative to demand they pay for the groceries worth around $200.
The woman went on to explain that her sister-in-law isn’t the best cook in the family and that she was shocked when told to pay so much for the groceries despite living under the line of poverty and relying on food stamps to survive.
After telling the relatives that they couldn’t afford the groceries, the 20-year-old’s mother-in-law allegedly suggested she use her food stamps for the expensive purchase.
“We couldn’t even if I wanted to give it because I don’t have that much money, I’m pregnant and we have a child, the money runs out quick,” the young woman explained.
“Sister-in-law has a nice job and her wife’s family is very wealthy and well off. I will not give my last dollars towards a meal I’m barely going to eat because they’re bad cooks, and make myself go hungry.”
Following a quarrel with the sister-in-law and the mother-in-law, the mom-to-be decided to skip out on the family gathering altogether.
“I decided I won’t bring my child to their Thanksgiving and I’m having my own with just my husband and our child,” she added.
“I used the last $40 on the food stamps that I had and was able to get a turkey and all the sides with coupons.”
Her husband, however, now had a change of heart and began telling her that they should forget about what went down and join his family for Thanksgiving dinner.
After asking Reddit readers for advice on how to deal with this matter, the 20-year-old received lots of support.
“They are pressuring you to commit a felony. That’s what happens when you use food stamps to pay for someone else’s food,” someone warned.
“This is a crime and could get you permanently banned from the program, fines, and even jail time.”
Another said: “Your husband will be the a**hole if he attends. This is so wrong on so many levels, and he needs to stick by you.”
