A woman has married herself after realizing that she would love to be the person married to herself.
Andria Johnson, 39, is a happily single woman whose relationship with her then-husband fell apart in 2018 after three years of marriage. As the woman admitted, the couple’s 14-year age gap on top of socioeconomic differences contributed to their bitter breakup and her decision to deal with her feelings through therapy.
Years later, Andria has learned to fully accept her shortcomings and finally love herself completely and unconditionally.
Now, the young lady traveled from her home in Hanover, Maryland, to Tulum in Mexico to tie the knot with herself.
While a local officiate was present for the ceremony, Andria didn’t bring any guests because she wanted the experience to be private and intimate. She also ended up reading her own vows and placing a wedding ring on her finger.
“I wanted to celebrate my new relationship with myself by doing what I should have done years ago,” she explained.
“In my first marriage, I made the mistake of dedicating myself to loving someone else unconditionally without giving myself that same love first.”
Hitting back at her critics, who branded her crazy and lonely, Andria added: “There were a lot of comments made to me and behind my back about me being pathetic, crazy, lonely, starved for attention, and a whole slew of other things.
“Some employees anonymously reported me to the HR department and initiated an investigation at work around my mental stability. It was really a tough time.”
Though the emotional ceremony went as planned and lasted the whole day, the 39-year-old admitted she felt nervous the day before despite not having any doubts about marrying herself.
She also said that seeing herself in her wedding dress made her forget about all her fears.
“My vows were deeply personal and were written throughout the week that I was there. Saying them to myself with eyes closed in nature was the ultimate bondage,” Andria says.
“I was alone, but never alone as long as I had myself. Then, when I saw myself in my wedding dress, it was amazing. I felt beautiful. I picked the dress for me that I wanted.”
Concluding her story, Andria explained she no longer cares what people think of her and her decisions. She also said being happily married to herself has taught her many things including the fact that she can’t bring anything to a relationship unless she loves herself first.
