A 50-year-old woman miraculously grows a nose on her arm after she lost the old one to cancer eight years ago.
It was in 2013 when Cecile from Toulouse, France, had her nose removed after she was diagnosed with sinus cancer.
The procedure removed not only cancer cells but also her sense of smell and confidence to leave her home.
Before the surgery, doctors had created a custom-made nose using 3D-printed biomaterial then kept it on ice, according to the Daily Mail.
This year, they implanted it under the skin on Carine’s forearm were blood vessels and cells grew into the device over a few months before they implanted it onto her face.
Cecile said she was very happy with the results as she can finally breathe her garden again.
In an interview with 20 Minutes, she said: “I can go out, I come back to life. It’s miraculous, this biomaterial was my last resort and I salute the research and the work of the doctors who helped me to hold on.”
“I stayed shut inside my home for these past eight years. When you are sick, you isolate yourself and the face is what you see first,” she added.
Before growing her new nose, medics tried giving her skin grafts to replace the tissue but those also deteriorated.
She was then given prosthetics but it was difficult to keep them positioned. That’s when surgeons Dr. Benjamin Valerie and Dr. Agnes Dupret-Bories asked if she would be interested in re-growing her nose.
The new nose device was implanted on her forearm as the skin there is thinner and similar to that on the face.
Two months later, the new nose was ready to be moved up to her face.
