A woman has been branded as “selfish” after revealing she refused to babysit her young nephew when her sister-in-law went into labor early.
Jessica managed to spark a heated debate on Reddit after revealing that her brother, Ben, had asked her to babysit his son when his wife went into labor two weeks earlier than expected.
While most people would agree without a fuss, Jessica said she didn’t want to look over her nephew because she never babysits and doesn’t want to look over other people’s kids.
Since Ben was unable to find anyone to watch his son on such short notice, he was forced to stay at home while his wife, Megan, was in labor at the hospital.
“We said no, I work a lot and my husband goes out of town for his work. Knowing this, they hired a sitter,” Jessica said as she insisted she and her husband like staying child-free.
“They begged me to watch my nephew, but I said no. My husband was out of town, and I had work that entire week, and didn’t know how long this was going to take.”
She continued: “They said it was an emergency, to which I reminded them ‘a lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on mine.’ My brother ended up having to leave her at the hospital to watch my nephew.”
After the incident, furious Ben and Megan vowed to never let their niece meet her “selfish” aunt.
Jessica, however, refuses to back down and apologize for not being there to support her brother when he needed her the most.
After asking the internet for advice, the woman was quickly branded as self-centered and cruel.
“I can’t believe you’re using the ‘no planning on your part’ phrase. They did plan, they made arraignments, the baby came early and their sitter had COVID. How can you be so uncaring to your own family?” someone said.
“Jesus, I hope you get to a point in your life where you need a helping hand and no one wants to help you,” another wrote.
A third agreed: “They had a plan in place but their plan got derailed. They asked for your help and you could have done it but didn’t want to be inconvenienced. Just a terrible selfish family member.”
