A woman was tricked into sending $30,000 to a scammer who pretended to be a Russian astronaut.
The unfortunate scheme took place in Japan where a 65-year-old woman fell in love with a man claiming to be a Russian astronaut who worked on the International Space Station.
According to the victim of the scam, her boyfriend, whom she became engaged to after months of chatting and virtual dating, had a social media profile filled with pictures from space and the ISS.
After the self-proclaimed astronaut proposed to the woman, he told her that he needed to pay for his “rocket landing fees” before he could leave his station in space.
Enamored by her new love life and the prospect of getting married, the 65-year-old agreed to pay for the alleged landing fees that amounted to a total of $30,000.
As the man insisted, the money would be used to cover the costs of his landing, whereas he promised to fly to Japan and marry his fiancée after landing on Earth.
After weeks of payments with no action on the man’s side, the woman became suspicious and reported her ‘fiancé’ to the police.
The authorities have since launched an investigation into the case and confirmed it is being investigated as a romance scam.
While one might think that they would never fall for a romance scam, such incidents are so common they cost people around the world hundreds of millions of hard-earned dollars every year.
