A plus-size influencer has sparked a heated debate after demanding free additional seats for overweight flyers.
Jaelynn Chaney is a Vancouver-based lifestyle and travel content creator who launched a petition asking the Federal Aviation Authority to pressure airlines into giving free additional seats to overweight flyers who can’t fit in one seat.
As of right now, plus-size people who require two or more seats to be comfortable on a plane are forced to buy additional tickets, therefore having considerably higher travel expenses than people who fit in one seat.
Attempting to change this in the name of body equality in travel, Jaelynn has called for airlines to give free additional seats to passengers who require them.
She also demanded plus-size travelers be refunded for additional seats they were forced to buy to travel by plane in the past.
“As plus-size travelers, my partner and I have unfortunately experienced discrimination and discomfort while flying,” the woman wrote in her petition.
“All plus-size passengers should be provided with an extra free seat, or even two or three seats depending on their size, to accommodate their needs and ensure their comfort during the flight.”
Chaney continued: “Airlines should offer a refund for plus-size passengers who purchase additional seats independently. This should be a straightforward process that can be accessed online or through customer service.”
While the young influencer acknowledged that this move would cause a further rise in the price of tickets, she insisted all passengers should face more expensive tickets and not just the overweight flyers.
“This mistreatment of plus-size passengers is unacceptable, and it highlights the urgent need for better policies that protect the dignity and rights of all passengers, regardless of size,” Chaney says.
“Unfortunately, plus-size passengers often experience discomfort and discrimination when flying. The lack of a uniform customer-of-size airline policy is unacceptable and must be addressed.”
Finally, the avid traveler called on the government to play its role in “funding or incentivizing” these inclusive policies.
“It’s time for the airline industry to take a stand and commit to creating a more inclusive and accommodating environment for all passengers. Join us in demanding that the FAA take action to protect plus-size travelers,” the petition concluded.
