UEFA is postponing Euro 2020 for a year due to the coronavirus outbreak post the request from many federations.
Days before, Italian store Tuttosport revealed that many countries had pleaded to push the European championship back until the next summer; however, the government body insisted that it will move forward.
Aleksander Ceferin, the UEFA chief has a significant decision on his hands as coronavirus is spreading rapidly across Europe and the tournament set to be played from June 12th, 2020 to July 12th, 2020.
According to SunSport, the authorities at UEFA said the tournament will be gone as usual and there is no plan to make any changes at this particular stage, and a task-force had been established with members actively considering the logistics of transferring the matches to less-affected regions.
The chief had further added contrary to the claim; they have not received any request from national associations to push the tournament date by a year.
However, it is now clear that the matches are postponed as seen below.
Euro 2020 was planned be played around 12 different countries to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the tournament.
Italy is one of the host countries where the matches will be held in Rome; however, as of now, the country is a complete lockdown after being the second-largest nation to be affected by a coronavirus.
This move has banned all public events including gyms, cinemas, pubs, funerals, weddings, etc. The country has even suspended many sporting events as well.
Many countries throughout the continent are following this suit following the cases and death continues to rise. The numbers of Champions League matches have been adversely affected.
Spain has also announced that all sporting events will be closed for the public for the next couple of weeks. It has affected the premier league matches.
