5 million of outraged Netflix users have slammed the platform for allowing the depiction of Jesus Christ as a gay man in their recent comedy movie.
Titled ‘The First Temptation of Christ,’ the 46-minute movie has upset people from around the world just moments after it aired in Brazil on December 3.
In the Netflix Christmas-edition comedy movie, the creators depicted Jesus as a homosexual man, an act that sparked an outrage among Christians.
“Jesus, who’s hitting the big 3-0, brings a surprise guest to meet the family. A Christmas special so wrong, it must be from comedians Porta dos Fundos,” the film’s description reads.
Following the movie’s release, over 1.5 million people have signed the petition demanding that Netflix removes the controversial video from its platform.
“We support freedom of expression, but is it worth attacking the belief of 86 percent of the population?” Eduardo Bolsonaro, the Brazilian President’s son, shared on social media.
Joining the petition to ban the movie were thousands of other people who branded the film “offensive,” “extremely inaccurate and upsetting,” and “vulgar and disrespecting.”
“Nothing good can come out of mocking ANY religion. There are plenty of other ways they could make a comedy with Jesus in it without disrespecting believers by making him gay,” someone wrote.
As bishop Henrique Soares da Costa revealed, he had stopped using Netflix and canceled his subscription after the “blasphemous” movie aired.
However, Porta dos Fundos, the production company in question, have struck back at the petitioners and said they have no intention of apologizing.
“Porta dos Fundos values artistic freedom and humor through satire on the most diverse cultural themes of our society and believes that freedom of expression is an essential construction for a democratic country,” they stated.
