Text messages of a callous dog owner went viral as the woman demanded payment after a Good Samaritan finally agreed to take in her sickly dog.
With over 3 million dogs ending up in animal shelters per year in the U.S. alone, most people are grateful to get someone to adopt their pooch and potentially save its life.
As one woman shared on Reddit under the topic ChoosingBeggars, however, her dog adoption experience was far from smooth.
The Redditer attempted to adopt a “sickly” dog from an “acquaintance” in order to save it from getting gassed in a shelter. As she soon found out, however, the dog owner, referred to as CB, would rather let her dog die than let it get adopted for free.
“Acquaintance left message tearfully *begging* me to take in her sickly untrained dog that she’s about to drop off at the shelter. When I reluctantly agree to help take the dog in, she then demands $450 from me,” the Reddit user wrote.
As it happens, CB not only dared to demand the woman pays an adoption fee but also offered her all the “extra stuff” for an additional $100.
After threatening the Redditer saying the dog will be put down if she doesn’t pay for her rescue, the rude dog owner went on to try and get the best bargain.
Fortunately, Luna was rescued. That, however, wasn’t the end of the story.
“My cousin & I each put in $50 and told CB the absolute most we would pay her is the $100 she’s asking for the supplies. She eventually accepted our offer,” the Redditer wrote in an update.
“Obviously, I didn’t want to give this awful human $100 for her bullshit but if that’s the price for going to sleep tonight knowing the dog is safe & away from her, I’m ok with it.”
As the new dog owner explained, Luna displayed signs of neglect when her cousin picked her up.
“The crate she wanted to charge us for was filthy and rusty, as if the dog had been locked in it for long periods of time and was just peeing all over. She must have been a really shitty owner because it looks like the dog hasn’t been bathed in ages and also has nails so long they’re curling under her feet.”
Following a heated exchange of words, the Redditer admitted she and her cousin “will be reporting CB for animal neglect and abuse. Cousin already took photos of the disgusting crate, her nails, her wounds, etc. I hope CB is punished or at least has her home searched in case she has any other animals.”
“It’s a happy ending. Luna gets medical care and an owner that loves her. Cousin got a new best friend. I can sleep better tonight knowing the pup’s away from this awful human,” she added.
