Puppies were abandoned by their owners on a construction site in central China’s province amid fears that coronavirus can be spread through pets, according to MailOnline.
Heartbreaking video shows a litter of puppies left by their human companions after communities around the country ordered their residents to stop having pets as the new strain of coronavirus took the lives of at least 490 people and infected over 24,000 worldwide.
The fears were sparked by the remarks made by one of the top experts for infectious diseases in China. The expert said that dogs and cats would also need to be isolated should they be exposed to patients with coronavirus.
But the World Health Organization claims that it hasn’t seen any evidence of the virus being passed onto pets.
Experts in the country are now stopping owners from abandoning their pets.
The leader of a team of experts appointed by the National Health Commission to deal with the deadly virus said that keeping pets could help improve their owner’s immune system.
Fortunately, the tiny pooches have been rescued by animal welfare organization Humane Society International after residences contacted one of its partner groups.
Video shared by HIS shows the puppies being fed at a shelter.
A spokesperson for HIS, Wendy Higgins, said to Mail Online: “It was very lucky that local residents spotted these puppies who were abandoned on a building site, because they are very young and may have struggled to survive.
“One of our Chinese partner groups was able to rescue them and they are now being cared for, although they believe two puppies from this litter are still missing so they continue to search for them.
“Chinese animal groups are trying to get the word out for people not to abandon or harm their pets.”
