An Indian couple was arrested on Friday after they abandoned their three days old child in the premises of a church in Kerala.
The authorities of the church noticed the abandoned child on Thursday and did not think twice before calling the police. After watching the CCTV camera footage, the parents of that child, Bitto, and Pratibha were identified and arrested on Friday.
Thirty-two-year-old father of that child told the Police that he was embarrassed about having the fourth child and had no choice but to abandon the baby. Both the parents had given their consent and decided not to face the social stigma, which comes with having four children.
The CCTV footage was also aired on the local TV channels of Kerala. In the clip, Bitto is seen cradling the baby and kissing the child before abandoning him, as he might not ever see the baby again.
When the news of Pratibha being pregnant again reached the ears of their friends and relatives, the couple was ridiculed by them. This reaction from their peers shaped their decision.
Both the husband and wife were convicted for abandoning the child who was less than the age of 12, under the IPC Section 317 and Juvenile Justice Act, Section 75 that includes punishing the parents for cruelty to the child.
As of now, the baby is healthy and is in good physical shape.
