27-year-old Eugene Chandler and 26-year-old Shaleigh Brumfield have been charged with murder after their two-month-old baby passed away from a cocaine and heroin overdose.
A grand jury indicted the parents for child neglect and homicide on June 25 in Virginia. Officers said they received a call for help in 2018 about an unresponsive baby girl found in the arms of the father.
Police attempted to save the baby’s life but it was already too late. Even though there were no signs of physical trauma to the child, the department launched a death investigation.
The case was investigated by the Western District Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. According to officers, the toxicology results from the baby’s system indicated enough cocaine and heroin to cause her death.
Officers also found evidence of drug use in the house. An autopsy ruled the child’s cause of death was due to an ‘acute heroin and cocaine intoxication in a setting of co-sleeping.’
Brumfield and Chandler are being held in the Danville City Jail without bond.
One person commented: “Poor baby. It’s thinking how did i get these fruit loops as parents. Animal’s look after their offspring better.”
Another wrote: “My God!! Just based on the looks of them, I would feel concerned with their ability to parent.”
A third said: “How were they allowed to take her home with them? I have no doubt the poor little thing would have been born with drugs in her system. What idiots thought that this was ok?”
Someone else commented: “these people need to be put UNDER THE JAIL…and their nostrils filled with dirt —– SLOWLY ..hows that for torture.”
