The parents of a 13-week premature baby, who were told their baby would not make it, are set to celebrate his first birthday.
Theo Tomlinson, from Glasgow, was weighed just 1lb 9oz when he was born at 27 weeks.
His parents, Kirsty Graham and Lyle Tomlinson, were told their baby would not even survive his first week.
The parents were left devastated when doctors told them to tell their family and friends not to bring toys, balloons, or gifts as the baby would not make it.
Theo’s mother Kirsty: “They (doctors) wanted the baby to get to 30 weeks because anything before that is dangerous, but they decided there and then they had to get Theo out if he was going to survive.”
“I had a C-section and he came out crying which the doctors said was very unusual for a baby so premature, so that gave us hope.”
The baby was put on a ventilator after being born and the parents couldn’t hold their baby for more than 11 days. Kirsty finally held Theo on Mother’s Day.
He then did well for three days but then his lung collapsed and he has been left with chronic lung disease after that.
Theo is now home and the parents are very happy their son is now doing well.
Kirsty said: “It’s amazing how far he has come. To think we were told to prepare for the worst.”
The mother said it was heartbreaking when she would see other mothers taking their babies home.
Theo has been left with chronic lung disease as a result and the parents are now figuring out how that will impact him as he gets older.
But, they are grateful that they are now celebrating his first birthday on March 20 as they never thought it would happen.
