Anti-vaxxer parents continue to ignore the safety of immune-compromised people even though they believe they are doing the right thing.
CafeMom wrote that it is a chance for parents to infect their kids with the chicken pox virus if they don’t want to give them the vaccine.
There are many private Facebook pages that allow parents to meet with other parents of children who are actively sick with chicken pox and they let them play together.
In some cases, they will do the ‘tenting method’ in which a sick child will stay in a blanket fort for 30 minutes to let the germs stay in the air. Then, a healthy child will stay in the blanket tent for also 30 minutes to get the virus.
Anti-vax people favor this chicken pox immunization method as it is ‘natural’ and avoids risks that come with vaccinations.
However, co-director Lindsay Diamond of Community Immunity said that the ‘natural’ way is not much different from getting children vaccinated. She also explained that allergic reactions from the vaccine are very rare.
Also, it is not only chicken pox that you are exposing your children to. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that getting chicken pox increases the risk for other illnesses like pneumonia, sepsis, brain inflammation, and Group A strep.
Chickenpox parties are dangerous. “And so these people then go out into their world. They go to the library, they go to the grocery store, they go to schools where there’s likely to be an immunocompromised person. And then you are risking the health of not only your own child, but the public health,” Diamond explained.
One social media user said: “Just saw a post varicella infection stroke case at #ASPNR2019 conference. History: patient had been at a Chicken Pox Party. Immunizations are important. Parents need to know complications of infections that can be prevented!”
Another said: “The vaccine thing. Ugh it’s exhausting. I got invited to a “chicken pox party” fuck no. The secondary skin infections and permanent disfiguration from chicken pox are why I vaccinate my daughter against it. I don’t care if “you survived” Debra. My daughter isn’t going to get it.”
A third said: “We had a chicken pox party as little kids with our cousins so that we’d all get infected and develop immunity together. My sister was too little to be exposed as a baby, so she got it as a sophomore in high school. It was very bad.”
