The parents of Daunte Wright, 20, have recently spoke to the public about their feelings and a lot of the audience have reached out in support to them.
The cop who has killed Daunte Wright is now named, with the occupation of being a senior female cop who has served for 25 years.
Officer Kimberly Potter is responsible for the accidental shooting, Wright had been pulled over due to the expired license plate tags on the car that he was driving. In the midst of it all, Wright started to struggle under restraints before being shot and driving off, crashing into another car and being pronounced dead by his girlfriend in the passenger seat.
Authorities haven’t confirmed how deep Wright’s outstanding warrant is, since he was supposed to appear in court last month for misdemeanor charges of fleeing officers while possessing a gun without a permit. His aunt explains that the warrant had to deal with marijuana possession.
On Tuesday morning, Wright’s parents, Katie and Aubrey, tell Good Morning America that they cannot accept that their son’s death was a mistake. Aubrey tells sources that the officer has served for 26 years, unable to accept Wright’s death as a mistake.
As a result, the cop who had mistaken her gun for her taser is now under the process of resigning, two days after the incident had happened.
In the interview, Wright’s mother wants the cop to be held accountable for “everything she’s taken from us,” Wright’s aunt exclaims: “Accident? An accident? No, come on now! I own a 20,000 volt taser. They don’t feel nothing like a gun. My family’s blood is on their hands,”
There has been civil unrest coming from the general public and from Wright’s immediate family alongside his girlfriend. In a tense press conference given by Tim Gannon, Brooklyn Center Police Chief, he explains that there had been an “accidental discharge” to be the main cause of Wright’s death.
Overnight, there were protests occurring and now there is looting involved in the Minnesota area.
There has been bodycam footage that reveals the moments that Potter fired her gun, after exclaiming “taser!” trying to reach for the taser instead of her firearm. Brian Peters, head of the Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association, confirm that Potters was training a rookie officer on the day of Wright’s death.
He comments, “she’s just a very dedicated, passionate, good person. It’s completely devastating. She made a mistake. It’s not her character.” More details about the female cop have been revealed, and she also has children of her own.
A civil rights attorney who is representing the Wrights, Ben Crump, tweets out that Potter “knew exactly what she was doing,” In a previous case, she informed officers on how to “obscure accountability,” to protect themselves.
Hundreds of protestors face police officials in Brooklyn center, chanting the victim’s name, “Daunte Wright!” before being chased away.
A vigil for Daunte Wright has been demonstrated for Wright’s parents.
