A couple who decided to let their child choose their own gender has shared how other people have accused them of child abuse.
In an interview with Mamamia, Dr. Kyl Myers revealed they have been flooded with emails and comments on social media and even letters from people who believe their child should be removed from their home.
“We didn’t assign a binary girl-or-boy gender to our child, Zoomer, at birth; we don’t disclose Zoomer’s genitals to people who don’t need to know,” she explained.
“We used the gender-neutral pronouns they/them/their for Zoomer until they could tell us what pronouns and labels fit best; and Zoomer learns about and explores gender without stereotypical expectations or restrictions,” Myers continued.
The mother said that their methods do not confuse their child but instead give him a more “nuanced understanding of sex and gender than a lot of adults.”
Dr. Myers explained in an article for Time magazine: “Zoomer understands that some girls have penises and some boys have vulvas, and some intersex kids have vulvas and testes. Zoomer knows some daddies get pregnant and some nonbinary parents are called Zazas.
“When a character on a kids’ show says, ‘Hello, boys and girls!’ Zoomer adds, ‘And nonbinary pals!’”
She revealed that she feared health care providers would not be willing to assist her during pregnancy due to her gender creative parenting but they were lucky to find those who support their decision.
Dr. Myers also said that Zoomer chose the pronouns he/him when he was four years old but he still prefers gender-neutral terms like ‘sibling’ or ‘kid’ instead of ‘nephew’ and ‘son.’
Despite the awkward conversations and online harassment, Dr. Myers said most people are loving and supportive.
