Angry parents have spoken out and blasted their son’s teachers after they started calling the boy by a female name.
The incident takes place in Wales, UK, where a young boy who identifies as a female asked his teachers if he could join girls in the physical education class. He allegedly also requested his teachers call him by a female name.
After the teachers agreed, the boy’s parents demanded their son undergoes therapy before such big changes are set in stone.
As the boy’s father explained according to The Sunday Times, his son had never opened up about his feelings before even though he admitted to being bullied.
Meanwhile, the school insisted they have no option but to adhere to the boy’s request because they have to follow the trans toolkit that was enforced by the government some time ago. Therefore, some teachers started calling the boy by his female name in spite of his parents’ fury.
“They said the child is within their rights to do this. We were like, ‘No, wait, don’t put him on a path we are really frightened of, we do not know where this path leads,’” the father recalled.
“The school was in a difficult position [as] they were following guidelines from the council which seemed to say go along with the child’s wishes. It was a horrible time.”
Following the meeting, the boy also met with an advocate who reassured him that it is his “human right to be called whatever he wants.”
The advocate allegedly also encouraged the child to wear female clothes and told him that the school would be in trouble if they refused to change his name in the official register.
After hiring a legal team, the parents got the Rhondda Cynon Taf council to temporarily suspend the trans toolkit in order to review it.
“Given that over two years have passed since the toolkit was introduced, the school summer holiday has provided us with an opportune time to consider how the toolkit might be improved to better support schools and their pupils,” a spokesperson for the council said of the toolkit.
“We will look to reinstate the toolkit as soon as possible, once our review is complete.
“RCT council, like others in the local authority sector, is committed to establishing arrangements that can assist in providing support to transgender and gender-questioning pupils. It would not be appropriate to comment on any single case or individual situation.”
According to the trans toolkit, teachers are required to support students who wish to change their gender. Such students should also be permitted to use changing rooms and toilets assigned to their preferred gender.
