Parents have spoken out and shared their story after their son’s tablet burned holes into the bed while it was charging next to the sleeping boy.
11-year-old Callum Hewkin was in for a shock after he woke up only to find that his Samsung tablet has scorched his bed while charging next to his head overnight.
According to the boy’s parents, Callum was watching a show on the tablet when he fell asleep without turning off or unplugging the device.
The next morning, 33-year-old Amy Hewkin and 32-year-old Stewart Hewkin were greeted by a smokescreen and a huge burn mark on the boy’s bed when they entered his room.
As the firefighters later explained, the bed was moments away from catching fire and putting the entire family at risk.
According to the couple, they didn’t know Callum was sleeping with his tablet next to him because they told him he wasn’t allowed gadgets at night.
“The last thing anyone wants is to wake up and find their child seriously injured or dead because a tablet or phone has set fire in their room,” Stewart said in an interview.
“We feel like we’ve had a lucky escape – Callum’s life could have been at risk. We had no idea he even had his tablet in his room, he had snuck it into bed with him because he wanted to watch something in bed.”
As the father added, he got shocked after entering the 11-year-old’s room.
“I was gobsmacked, I never thought it would happen to us or that something like that even could happen – you don’t expect an iPad or tablet to just start burning like that,” he added.
Following the incident, the Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service urged people not to charge their gadgets while on potentially flammable surfaces.
