Another man has been detained by police after he was caught throwing three coins at a plane for good luck before take-off.
CCTV footage of the incident showed the 31-year-old man throwing coins from the jet bridge while he was boarding the flight with his family at Wuhan Tianhe International Airport in Hubei Province.
Because of his superstitious actions, Hainan Airlines flight 7783 was delayed for 40 minutes. According to Chinese media, it affected 101 passengers on the plane.
The footage showed the man’s wife walking behind him, carrying their 4-month-old baby. As he approached the cabin door, he slowed down and took something out from his pocket before throwing coins through the narrow gap between the plane and the jet bridge.
One 1 jiao and two 1 yuan coins were spotted on the ground next to the plane’s engine after a security guard alerted airline staff.
Xia, the man who threw coins, later told police that it was his mother-in-law who told him to throw coins at the aircraft to pray for a safe flight because it was the baby’s first time to fly.
He was detained for ten days for endangering passenger safety in Wuhan while his wife continued to fly with their baby.
According to a professor at the Civil Aviation University of China, the engine of the plane would be damaged or destroyed if a coin is sucked into it.
“The engine could tremble, lose speed and even stop in mid-air if a coin were sucked into its core,” he said. “That would put all the passengers on board at great risk.”
This is not the first time a passenger tossed coins into a plane’s engine for good luck. In February, a 28-year-old man was detained for a week after throwing two 1 yuan coins at another Lucky Air passenger jet.
