Doctors were left surprised as a patient came back to life 90 minutes after his heart stopped due to a cardiac arrest.
The incident occurred at a beach house in Victoria, Australia, where Alistair Blake suffered a cardiac arrest while resting on the bed with his wife Melinda.
As the wife revealed, she found her husband unresponsive and pale after returning to the bedroom following a quick visit to the bathroom.
“I knew he was dying, that we were in trouble and I was on my own down at the beach house,” Melinda said in an interview with The Herald Sun.
While she may have been alone with Alistair in the house, Melinda had just completed another set of first aid training, allowing her to commence CPR without any assistance.
After the emergency responders arrived at the scene, they had been working on Blake for well over an hour and gave him eight defibrillator shocks and a dose of adrenaline.
Despite their efforts, the team had begun to lose hope after the man was unresponsive, and clinically dead, for 90 minutes.
“I was thinking how can you bloody die on the floor, this is our dream beach house. This was supposed to be where we were going to relax, so it was pretty confronting,” Melinda said.
Just when all hope was lost, the paramedics noticed that Alistair’s chest was moving and the man’s heart miraculously came back to life.
From there, the medics rushed the man to a hospital where his clogged artery was cleaned before he was moved into ICU.
Four days later, Alistair, who was dubbed Lazarus by the staff in charge of his recovery, has regained consciousness. While the doctors put a pacemaker on his heart just to be sure, the man has survived the ordeal with no physical or mental impairment.
“I feel it is a miracle that I am as fit, able and healthy as I am compared with the potential of what I could have ended up being,” he said after his close call with death.
