Sir Paul McCartney of Beatles fame has spoken out about some of the allegations he had to face as the world’s most famous band infamously tore apart in 1970.
One of the main points he clarified was why he had to sue the band.
As the cover model for this month’s British GQ, Sir Paul said that the media reported as if the individual members of the Beatles all hated each other when the band tore apart, and that is why he sued the band.
However, McCartney argues that while there were conflicts and arguments within the band, it was because they were a family. According to him, like every close relationship, there were disagreements about what they wanted to do. In the case of the band, it was over who should be band’s manager.
McCartney recalls that the 3 other band members – John Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr – all wanted Allan Klein to take over the band as manager. However, Paul said he vehemently opposed Klein because he though Klein was an “idiot”.
Decades after the disbanding, McCartney argues that he had to sue the band and thus Klein to save the Beatles and Apple Music. The bassist says if he hadn’t done that, the rights of their legendary music would have all belonged to Klein instead of Apple.
He further explained that he aimed to sue Klein and Klein only, yet soon found out that such measures were impossible because Klein had not yet taken over the band. Thus, according to McCartney, he had no choice but to sue the band over the rights for the music.
Sir Paul acknowledged that the legal action was a difficult one for him to make, yet he also said he knew he was doing the right thing for himself and for all the other Beatles.
In the end, Paul’s disliking of Klein did have a sense of clairvoyance because all three of the other Beatles all ended up disliking Klein. However, McCartney said that he felt terrible and used alcohol as an escape.
He said it was only after he met his current wife Linda that he decided it was time to pick himself back up and return to doing what he does best and enjoys the most – writing and performing music.
