As it was found out, the two birds were nesting under the sushi truck – because what better nesting place than the one right beneath a food source.

While the pair was removed from the premises by rescuers and the police, the two sassy lovers returned to try their luck for the second time just hours after being evicted.

Speaking of the incident to RNZ, the New Zealand sushi store’s owner, Long Lin, admitted to luring the birds with salmon before catching them and calling the rescuers for assistance.

“They were trying to come out from underneath the house, and I caught one and put it inside the house, I just didn’t want it to run away. Then another one came out, he was obviously looking for his mate and I caught it,” he recalled.

Following the unusual call for help, Mike Rumble of the Department of Conservation arrived at the scene and apprehended the culprits. He also made sure that they were uninjured before moving them to a more appropriate nesting site.

“We’ve got two boxes over at the wharf which have never been used, we are going to put them there for the night and see if they come back, and I’m willing to bet they will. Then the backup place is around near Days Bay,” he added.

Fortunately for the penguins, they were placed next to the water and far away from busy streets and sushi shops.

Blue penguins are known to be loyal to their nesting site which is why they typically return to the same spot every year.
