People all over the world have been freaking out after realizing that they suffer from astigmatism.
It all started with a tweet which has since gone viral on the internet. The tweet had a photo from @UnusualFacts6 – a Twitter account which deals with weird internet facts – showing the difference between how an astigmatic person and a normal person sees a particular scene.
“Astigmatism is when the cornea is slightly curved rather than completely round..,” the caption of the pic read. “With astigmatism, light focuses on several points of the retina rather just one point. This is what people with Astigmatisms vs without.”
Astigmatism occurs when the lens or the cornea has curves which don’t fit well. A normal person has both the lens and cornea in a circular shape but a person with astigmatism has these elements in an oval shape.
A perfectly rounded eye refracts the incoming light in a proper manner so as to create a well-focused image on the innermost portion of the eye.
After the tweet went viral, people across the globe felt surprised by the shocking comparison. Many realized that they were suffering from the condition while some took the opportunity to crack jokes.
“I have very slight astigmatism so this doesn’t happen all the time to me… I just thought some lights made lines and others didn’t,” one user commented.
“If anyone is curious about how common this is, about 30% of the population has this! I have it too, had no idea it was a minority thing,” another person said.
“I have astigmatism so I see the left image AND i get double vision sometimes like i’ll see two cars instead of one. I have to squint REALLY hard, sit straight up and go into maximum focus mode so I dont die lol,” one person wrote.
