People in Colombia broke coronavirus lockdown after an image of Jesus Christ appeared in a tree.
Locals of the Jose Antonio Galan neighborhood reportedly went out of the safety of their homes to have a look at the image that had mysteriously appeared within the trunk of a tree.
In the video recorded by journalist Rafael Rodriguez for El Propio Mangangue, residents can be seen taking pictures of the tree.
“Dozens of people are gathered here. They are here to see the figure of what they say or believe is the figure of Christ, they have forgotten about coronavirus and are currently here looking at this figure,” Rodriguez said.
In his video, people are looking up at the image of Jesus.
A resident, Agustina Diaz, said to reporters: “It can clearly be seen, and everybody is praying and asking for Earth to be cured of this evil and for Magangue to be protected.”
According to local authorities, they are concerned that the tree will become a pilgrimage site now that the country is in lockdown because of the coronavirus crisis.
“The figure appeared last Sunday night and people rushed there with candles and transformed the place into a pilgrimage site, which is concerning neighbours as a lot of people are going there,” said local journalist Rodolfo Zambrano.
The Mayor of Magangue, Carlos Cabrales, was informed about the gathering and joined officers at the scene to force residents to go back to their homes.
As of April 4, there are 1,521,030 coronavirus cases worldwide with 88,565 fatalities.
Colombian President Ivan Duque said during a live broadcast: “This isolation – which seeks the best of all of us – is exactly so we can keep saving lives, breaking the exponential growth of this pandemic.”
