Thousands of women across the United States marched to protest against the recent wave of abortion bans that have sprouted in numerous states.
Over 500 #StopTheBans demonstrations were set to take place at courthouses, town squares and statehouses across multiple states, as well as in Canada and Puerto Rico.
The demonstrations were organized by civil rights organizations and abortion rights group including the National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League, Planned Parenthood, Women’s March, and American Civil Liberties Union.
The ACLU shared on Twitter: “Every dot on this map represents a different protest happening to #StopTheBans. We’ll be joining marches from coast to coast in today’s national day of action. Politicians, take notice: If you come for our reproductive freedom, you’ll have to get through ALL of us.”
Missouri lawmakers previously voted to make almost all abortions illegal after 8 weeks of pregnancy, joining anti-abortion legislation in Ohio, Kentucky, Alabama, Mississippi, and Georgia. The new laws are part of an effort by advocates of anti-abortion to get the matter before the Supreme Court and overturn Roe v. Wade.
The movement’s site stated: “Across the country, we are seeing a new wave of extreme bans on abortion, stripping away reproductive freedom and representing an all-out assault on abortion access.
“We will show up to speak out and fight back against this unconstitutional attempt to gut Roe and punish women. Politicians shouldn’t be making decisions best left to women, their families, and their doctors.”
The #StopTheBans demonstrations started with hundreds of people assembled outside the Supreme Court in Washington, DC.
Many Democratic politicians, including Amy Klobuchar, Cory Booker, Pete Buttigieg and Kirsten Gillibrand participated.
Several women also shared their own stories of having to get abortions. California Rep. Jackie Speier said at the rally: “You know me, I am one of the 1 in 4 women who has had an abortion in this country. … I am not ashamed.”
Another protester said: “Roe v. Wade saved my life.”
