Hundreds of people from a small town in the state of Victoria in Australia have been struck with a mysterious skin condition that causes pimply rashes.
As the authorities fear, the disease that struck the town of Lara could spread to other areas and potentially to larger cities that are home to millions of people.
So far, over 400 people have complained about getting rashes and doctors have no idea what they are or how to treat them.
According to newer reports, the condition already made it out of Lara into two surrounding towns, Geelong and Bacchus Marsh, that are located within a 50km radius of the origin of the disease.
One victim of the mysterious rash, Donna Leitch of Lara, complained about having the rash since July. As she added, her daughter’s rash allegedly disappeared when she went to Melbourne and flared up again upon her return to Lara.
“They can’t tell me what it is, or what’s causing it – doctors just throw creams and antibiotics at you,” she said in an interview with Geelong Advertiser.
“It always seems to flare up when I have a shower – I’ve never been so itchy in my life,” another local said.
After dozens of residents accused the water supply of being polluted and the water looking “murky,” Barwon water, the government water corporation responsible for the supply of water to the aforementioned towns, released the following statement:
“Lara’s water is unquestionably safe.
“We have not made any recent changes to the source water or its treatment.
“We continually monitor the water quality at our water treatment plants and within our network to ensure it meets the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines. The testing is done by an independent NATA-accredited laboratory.”
According to the Department of Health and Human Services, the rashes are being investigated in collaboration with health services.
