People gathered to a statue of a Virgin Mary that ‘weeps tears of blood.
’
The spectacle in the southern province of Lecce, Italy was first noticed by a boy riding his bicycle in the town of Carmiano, which has 12,000 residents.
According to journalist Andrea Tafuro, people who wanted to pray and witness the phenomenal scene flocked to the statue, which was built on September 3, 1943.
A viral video also shows Italian residents standing at the base of the Virgin Mary statue as a ‘bloody tear’ falls from its eye.
The priest of Sant’Antonio Abate Church, Riccardo Calabrese, said that it is not clear if the spectacle was ‘a miracle, the result of the hot weather at the moment, or worst of all, someone’s idea of a joke.’
Calabrase spoke out after temperatures in the area soared over 40degrees and many believe the ‘bloody tears’ may be caused by condensation.
“All the time I was next to the statue, I saw a procession of people who, out of curiosity or faith, left their homes to gather there,” Calabrese said.
“I saw children, teenagers, adults, and elderly people meeting at our beloved Virgin Mary statue, and they all looked up at her face.”
Local newspaper Repubblica also said that Michele Ceccia, the Bishop of Lecce, announced that the church will make an investigation.
