With the temperatures rising, the pets are the most affected.
It is necessary for them to walk daily but if they walk on hot surfaces, their paws might burn.
To ensure that their paws do not burn, they should be walked either early morning or late at night. Walking your dog during the day of evening should be avoided at any cost since the pavements or roads might still be too hot for their delicate paws.
A Blue Cross Veterinary nurse, Tracey Parnell, said that one can know if it is safe to walk the dogs by performing a simple test.
The dog owners should themselves stand on the path without shoes and socks and if they feel the path is too hot to keep their own feet for more than five seconds, the pavement is actually too got for their dogs as well.
She also recommended that one can walk their dogs on grass in the hot weather.
This comes after a dog, Buster, visited the veterinary clinic with burnt paws. its owners were unaware of the dangers of walking dogs on hot paths.
The dog now sports special booties to soothe the burns and will make a full recovery. To prevent similar situations, Tracey advised to take the simple test first.
One can know if their pet suffers from painful burns if the pet is seen limping or licking their paws. Any signs of blisters, darkened or red pads on their feet also suggest burning.
Symptoms for heat stroke include vomiting, heavy panting, dark or red gums and tongue. One can cool down their pet by pouring cool water on them or giving them cool water if the pet shows these signs.
