A devoted pet owner has gone viral after spending hundreds of dollars on a life-saving surgery to save his beloved goldfish.

As Michael Dare revealed, he had bought Bubbles the Goldfish eight years ago for just $30. While he could easily buy a new one, the businessman decided to put Bubbles through a life-saving surgery after it developed a tumor on the stomach.

According to Mr. Dare, who keeps his fish at his ZenDen Acupuncture Clinic, he noticed a bulge on Bubbles’ stomach around half a year ago and got worried after it grew bigger and bigger.

“It wasn’t looking promising for the fish,” the man admitted in an interview with Daily Mail Australia.

After finding an exotic animal vet to take care of Bubbles, the man has spent over $300 on having the tumor removed.

“It’s becoming a specialist discipline in veterinary medicine,” vet Ingrid Danylyk-Huisman said of the routine procedure. “Anesthesia is the hardest thing, it’s quite easy to give them too much.”

After the 10-minute surgery, Ingrid placed the anesthetized fish into oxygenated water to help him recover before Dare was able to take him home.

“If we can have the choice to help or destroy, I’d rather help,” the entrepreneur added.

As he explained, he has gotten close to Bubbles over the years they’ve spent together.

Dare initially bought four fish, including Bubbles, and placed them in a pond outside his clinic to allow patients to relax after their treatment.

“You put your hand in there and the fish will swim over your hand so there’s obviously a connection here with the fish,” he said.

“They’re not just some mindless creatures. They acknowledge who you are and we acknowledge who they are.”
