Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and his husband Chasten welcome their newborn twins Joseph August and Penelope Rose.
The 39-year-old became the first gay Cabinet member in the history of the United States to have children.
He announced the heartwarming news on Twitter with a black-and-white photo, writing: “Chasten and I are beyond thankful for all the kind wishes since first sharing the news that we’re becoming parents.”
“We are delighted to welcome Penelope Rose and Joseph August Buttigieg to our family,” Buttigieg added.
It is not clear whether the twins were born to a surrogate mother or adopted but the pair had been trying to adopt children for more than a year.
According to the Washington Post, they listed themselves as available to adopt a baby who had “been adopted or surrendered at a very little notice.”
The couple were close to adopting a child many times, the paper reported.
In a July interview with The Washington Post, Chasten said: “It’s a really weird cycle of anger and frustration and hope. You think it’s finally happening, and you get so excited and then it’s gone.”
Finally, they received the news that they were going to be parents.
In a tweet Buttigieg posted in August, he wrote: “We’re overjoyed to share that we’ve become parents! The process isn’t done yet and we’re thankful for the love, support, and respect for our privacy that has been offered to us. We can’t wait to share more soon.”
At 39, Buttigieg is also the youngest person to ever head the US Transportation Department.
One person commented: “Congratulations!! I am so very happy for the two of you! You both will make wonderful parents! Enjoy parenthood!!”
Another wrote: “Congratulations to the new family. May God bless you all.”
