A lot of times it has been seen that whenever we search for something on the internet, a minute later an advert pops up on our social media, of the exact same thing.
As amazing as it might seem, it can be because our phones secretly keep a tab on us.
Targeted Ads are one such marketing scheme majority of the world has come to terms with. This process tallies with your search history and shows you advertisements for things you have just searched for on the website’s ad spaces later.
However, people have started thinking that phone companies and advertisers have taken this a step further. These days, smartphone have voice assistant apps which are always listening for the user’s command.
This can be the reason to why sometimes adverts of things we did not search, but have been talking about also pop-up on the screen.
Although some of the major social networking companies like Apple and Facebook have fiercely denied using any such customer data from their conversations, some tests wouldn’t hurt.
By pulling together a few topics that were never googled or spoke about over the phone before from that phone, it could be a well thought out test.
So, the sourced person turned on the microphone access on all the apps on the phone and continued using social media apps like they used to.
However, after a few days, the sourced person found ads on her phone about business cards, which she had never googled about, but had spoken about with her friend with the phone on the table.
Several other such topics she spoke to her friend about came up as advertisements in her social media, and this pattern followed.
This is proof enough that our phones are always on and listening to us, even apps like Whatsapp which vouch about chats being private and encrypted.
While this experiment is not full-proof, it still does give us an idea of how our phones spy on us.point 192 | Dr.point 195 | Peter Henway, who is a senior security consultant for a cyber-security firm called Asterix, said that every phone is programmed to only record and understand once it hears the right ‘trigger word,’ which activate the voice assistant apps.point 404 | 1
However, since it is always waiting for such commands, it is always listening. Another cyber expert, Edward Whittingham is equally as convinced, but no one yet knows the reason for such targeted ads for sure.
