Sometimes, the ordinary things are not enough and that’s what was plaguing Davey Hamilton, from Indianapolis.
He wanted the truck of his dreams but struggled to find it. But a friend from Maine who is another driver and who also owned a truck inspired Davey to take a different tack.

That’s when Davey came upon the idea of making a truck that drove backward. But first, he needed a truck that had a back window big enough to act as a windscreen.
Davey said: “A lot of the older trucks have really small back windows; they don’t have the wide ones. I couldn’t find a truck with a big back window.
“I happened to find this truck three miles from my father’s house and knew it was the one.”
The truck in question still had its original body as well as the frames and pedals.
Davey said: “We had put the lights on obviously, going the wrong direction.
“I didn’t know what to do for bed cover, so we figured to keep the rustic look and just use this piece of plywood.”
Obviously, a lot of work was needed in order to put things together and make sure that everything worked just right.
“We had to cut a hole between the bed of the truck and the cab of the truck for your feet to go in,” he said.
“And so that had to be sealed up so there’s no water getting inside.”
Despite the seats and doors being installed, more work was needed to make it road-worthy. To make it safe to drive, windshield wipers were installed.
Davey said: “It looks like it’s supposed to go forward. And so it took some time to get everything leveled out and make sure that was mounted properly.”
Surprisingly, the truck is easy to drive despite it going backward.
He explained: “It’s easy to drive, it’s got like good brakes and all that that goes with it but it’s still a 1952 Ford truck. It’s fun, it’s actually really dynamic with the cab backward, I’ll tell you that.”
While the truck can reach up to 85mph, the former race car driver has no plans of taking it to the race track.
Still, it already gets enough attention from pedestrians and drivers alike.
But there are other reasons Davey just loves his creation.
“Number one, it’s an attention-getter,” he said.
”Number two, it’s definitely a fan favorite, and number three, it was a lot of work.
“There are new people that see it every time we take it out and it’s definitely a crowd getter.”
