Pizza Could Be Better For Breakfast Than A Bowl Of Cereal

Registered dietitian Chelsey Amer claims a slice of pizza in the morning might be a healthier choice than a bowl of cereal.

She said a slice could be a more balanced breakfast than most cereal as it offers more fresh ingredients, more protein, and less sugar than cereal.

Most commercial-brand cereals do not offer enough nutritional value and lack healthy fats or protein.

Amer also said pizza provides a strong balance of fats and protein carbs, unlike other cereals that have the same amount of calories in a candy bar.

She told The Daily Meal: “You may be surprised to find out that an average slice of pizza and a bowl of cereal with whole milk contain nearly the same amount of calories. However, pizza packs a much larger protein punch, which will keep you full and boost satiety throughout the morning.”

One serving of Frosted Flakes has 110 calories, 10 grams of sugar and 0 grams of fat. But many people do not stick to just one serving.

According to a 2014 study by Consumer Report, most people eat up to 132% more than a single serving.

On the other hand, a slice of cheese pizza has around 272 calories, 4 grams of sugar, 10 grams of fat, and 12 grams of protein.

With these findings, eating pizza instead of Frosted Flakes may be a good choice as it offers more protein and fats, and fewer grams of sugar.

“Because eating a slice of pizza for breakfast when you’re really it, will prevent you from binging on an entire pie later,” Amer wrote on her blog.

She also said that many brands of cereals should not be considered a balanced part of breakfast due to high levels of sugar.
