A plane made an emergency landing after the pilot suffered a heart attack while in the cockpit.
The aircraft had been traveling to the famous Black Sea resort of Anapa from Moscow but it had to land at Platov International Airport in southern Russia as a pilot suffered a fatal heart attack.
Despite paramedics’ efforts, the 49-year-old co-pilot passed away.
A spokesperson for the Russian state airline Aeroflot said to local media: “Unfortunately it was not possible to resuscitate the pilot.
“He died in the ambulance. We express our sincere condolences to his family and friends.”
The aircraft left Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport at 8:20 am and landed at Rostov-on-Don in Southern Russia at 9:57 am.
The plane was flying at 33,000ft when an immediate emergency landing was sought by the captain, according to local media.
“A female flight attendant ran through the plane asking if there was a doctor because one of the crew members was feeling unwell,” said one passenger, according to the Daily Star.
“Several minutes later we were told that the aircraft was performing an emergency landing.”
According to reports, the preliminary cause of death was thrombosis or a heart attack. However, the Russian Investigative Committee’s southern investigative department has launched an investigation into the case.
Russian airline company said in a statement to CNN: “Everyone at Aeroflot is deeply saddened by our colleague’s death, and we extend our sincere condolences to his friends and loved ones.”
None of the crew and passengers on board were hurt during the emergency landing.
In August, pilot Damir Yusupov had to make an emergency landing in a cornfield after “one engine caught fire and the other stopped working.”
Yusupov, who was hailed a hero after the incident, called for an emergency crash landing at the airport but decided to place the aircraft down as soon as possible.
