A breeding center has welcomed the world’s heaviest twin panda cubs, according to state media.
Po, their mother who was named after the beloved character in the film Kung Fu Panda, gave birth to the set of mixed-set twins at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in China.
The female panda cub weighed 209 grams (7.3 ounces) and the male cub weighed 211.6 grams (7.4 ounces.) According to Xinhua, they are known to be the heaviest panda twins born in the world.
The average weight of a panda cub is around 150 grams.
It was in November 2010 when Po was born at Zoo Atlanta. She was the only giant panda born in the US that year.
After three months, the zoo named her Po after the beloved character in Kung Fu Panda, believing she was a male Panda.
Po then came back to her native China in 2013 and was discovered to be a girl while officials arranged her papers.
Excited staff at the breeding center wrapped the male cub in a blanket and took them to an incubator for a check-up. Two hours later, the female cub was born and was also placed in an incubator.
Baby pandas are born blind, pink and hairless. They start to develop their iconic black-and-white coat at around six months old.
There are a total of 298 giant panda cubs born at the Chengdu research base, Xinhua reported.
One internet user commented: “So funny how huge mom is and how teeny tiny the babies are. Amazing that they two will one day be her size. Hope they are healthy and strong!!”
Another wrote: “I never thought I was going to see that today but, how lovely. Hopefully they will be well taken care off and go on to live long happy lives – as beary as they might be *lol*”
A third said: “They have such long tails when born. So cute!!”
