A pigeon has been arrested and branded a “suspected spy” after the police in India found it lurking near the border with Pakistan.
The animal was first found by Geeta Devi, a local from Kathua, Kashmir, who realized the bird was painted pink and carried a ring with numbers on it around its foot.
After the police learned of the suspected spy, the pigeon has been arrested and taken into custody by the Indian Border Security Force.
“We don’t know from where it came. Locals captured it near our fences. We have found a ring in its foot on which some numbers are written. Further investigation is underway,” Kathua Police Senior Superintendent, Shailendra Kumar Mishra, revealed according to The Times of India.
The police have allegedly also spoken out to the paper and explained their reasons for concerns by saying:
“Though birds have no boundaries and many fly across international borders during migration, a coded ring tagged to the captured pigeon’s body is a cause for concern as migratory birds don’t have such rings.”
As the authorities have confirmed, the pigeon is set to remain in custody until they get to the bottom of the matter.
According to the reports, this isn’t the first time a flying ‘spy’ was caught by the police. Previously, in 2015, one pigeon carrying a short message along with several numbers got intercepted and arrested just miles away from the India-Pakistani border.
While an X-ray revealed that the bird wasn’t carrying anything dangerous, the police branded it a suspected spy.
