A 9-year-old boy has admitted to lighting a fire with a blowtorch while three men have also breached the total fire ban of NSW as fire rage throughout Sydney.
According to police, a 27-year-old man lit a small campfire at Wallacia in the western part of Sydney to boil water for tea. As soon as he saw firefighters and police, he immediately extinguished the fire but was issued a $2,200 infringement notice.
Only after a few hours, cops were called to a house at Prestons in the south-west area of Sydney as a 35-year-old man reportedly burned fence palings in a tube-shaped barbecue.
NSW Police said in a statement: “Embers from this fire fell to the ground and ignited palings, causing a secondary blaze,”
The 35-year-old was also issued an infringement notice.
A 46-year-old man was also arrested after he allegedly lit a small coal barbecue at a Lalor Park home. He is due to appear in local court next week.
Police also caught a 9-year-old boy who admitted to lighting the grass fire with a blowtorch after fire broke out behind a street in Nowra.
Due to his young age, he was only warned under the Young Offenders Act.
The 9-year-old was with a group of other children when the incident occurred.
The total state-wide fire ban means people cannot light, use or maintain a fire in the open, or do any activity that can cause a fire.
One internet commented: “Why has this boy got access to a blowtorch? And has he a history of cruelty to animals? If so, take a much much closer look.”
Another wrote: “Today’s pre teenager delinquent, tomorrow’s arsonist adult. You deserve jail time. I don’t care how old he is. Parents must be so proud!”
