A police chief has been sacked after he was found guilty of falling asleep in his patrol car after having “a few drinks” while on duty.
Eddie Johnson, a former Chicago police chief, was fired in a dramatic showdown just one month before his supposed retirement date.
According to the accusations, the chief attempted to cover up his drinking session and the act of falling asleep in his car while on duty.
Mayor Lori Lightfoot lashed out at the chief during a press conference in which she accused him of “misleading” the authorities, including her, while trying to cover up the incident.
Mr. Johnson was found asleep in his car just after midnight after a concerned passerby called 911. Initially, the chief blamed his tiredness on the medications he was taking but later admitted he enjoyed “a few drinks” while having dinner.
Following a thorough investigation, however, the mayor said CCTV footage confirmed that Johnson lied. While she refused to explain what exactly had happened, she claimed to keep the chief’s actions private in order to protect his family including his three kids.
Previously, Johnson attempted to justify his actions by blaming the pills he’s been taking on drowsiness.
“How can I explain it? It’s just your body kind of gives you a warning with the high blood pressure thing that you may pass out, so I pulled over, stopped and I just rested myself until that feeling passed,” he insisted.
However, the chief’s actions were exposed thanks to a nearby surveillance system.
“I will not comment today on specific details,” Mayor Lori Lightfoot said.
“At some point, the report may become public. I do not feel that it’s appropriate for his wife or children to do so at this time.”
