A police officer in Michigan who pulled over a distressed elderly man for speeding ended up installing his flat-screen TV after the 79-year-old told him that his wife was sick.
Sterling Heights Officer Kevin Coates pulled over David on September 30. Dashcam footage caught their emotional conversation where the elderly man explained that his wife was sick and their son was suffering from mental illness.
He also told the officer that he was driving fast as he was searching for someone who could help him set up his newly bought 50-inch flatscreen television, which he had purchased to cheer up his wife.
“I really try to drive right,” David explained. “I bought a television today because I wanted to make my wife happy and I can’t get it hooked up.”
After hearing David’s side, Officer Coates left him off with a warning and offered to install his television.
“Well I’m getting another police run right now so I can’t come by now, but if I have time tonight, maybe I’ll stop by and take a look at it,” Coates said.
Less than an hour later, Officer Coates, Officer Remi Verougstraete, and Officer Jeremy Jakushevich went to the elderly man’s home and helped him install his television.
Once everything was set up, David was “very thankful” for the assistance from the Michigan cops.
Audio from the officers captured the cops explaining how the remote works and the elderly man telling the cop: “I appreciate you.”
Speaking to Fox 2 Detroit, Sterling Heights Lt. Mario Bastianelli said: “That’s not an officer’s job, going in and hooking up TVs right?
“But he took it upon himself, an act of kindness saying look were people too and were trying to help our citizens. Somebody’s gotta step up and were glad to do it.”
Department Chief Dale Dwojakowski complimented the cops’ small act of kindness.
“I’m very proud of Officer Coates, Officer Verougstraete, and new recruit Officer Jakushevich for going above and beyond to help our residents,” he said. “This is just another example of the amazing service that the Sterling Heights Police Department provides our community.”
