Five Arizona police officers were kicked out of a Starbucks coffee shop after a woman complained to staff that she ‘didn’t feel safe’ with cops being around, according to reports.
Cops from the Tempe Police Department were having a short break at a Starbucks branch when a barista approached them and said that a customer had complained about their presence.
The Tempe Officers Association shared in a series of tweets that the worker told the five cops to either leave the premises or move away from the complaining woman’s line of sight.
Rob Ferraro, the president of the union, told Fox 10: “It’s become accepted to not trust or to see police and think that we’re not here to serve you.
“And again, it goes back to – we take great pride of the level of customer service we provide to citizens, and to be looked at as feeling unsafe when you have law enforcement around you is somewhat perplexing to me.”
The union addressed what happened in a series of tweets, describing the incident ‘disheartening.’
“While the barista was polite, making such a request at all was offensive. Unfortunately, such treatment has become all too common in 2019.”
The union doesn’t blame the company as a whole and said they looked forward to working with them “on this important dialogue.”
But the union posted a parody of the Starbucks logo with ‘Dump Starbucks’ on it and a hand pouring out the liquid from the coffee cup.
It also had an accompanying caption that read: “Don’t appreciate @Starbucks asking our #Tempe cops to leave your establishment on July 4.
“Several of those cops are #veterans who fought for this country! #ZeroRespect’”
A spokesperson for the company said that an investigation is being conducted. Reggie Borges told the Arizona Public: “We have a deep respect for the Tempe Police and their service to the community.
“We’ve reached out to the Tempe Police Department and Tempe Officers Association to better understand what happened and apologize. We want everyone in our stores to feel welcomed and the incident described is not indicative of what we want any of our customers to feel in our stores.”
