A teenage activist had her front teeth knocked out after getting punched by a police officer during a clash between the authorities and protesters.
The incident occurred in Grant Park, Chicago, where 18-year-old Miracle Boyd was addressing a large crowd of protesters who were attempting to topple the statue of Christopher Columbus.
As some one thousand protesters took over the park and tied ropes around the statue, hordes of police officers were deployed to stop them from damaging the historic monument.
Soon after Boyd finished her speech, she too had allegedly confronted a police officer and started recording the escalations before getting punched in the face and losing her front teeth.
“My tooth was knocked out. I have lip abrasions in my mouth. My teeth hurt really bad,” the teen girl said in an interview with ABC7.
According to Boyd, the police officer, who was caught on camera punching her in the face, knocked the phone out of her hand before attacking her. The member of the activist group called GoodKids MadCity also insisted that the police took her phone.
Following the incident, a GoFundMe page was started with the intention of raising funds for the young activist’s medical expenses. Before new donations were disabled, the page had raised over $80,000 for Boyd.
“Miracle is going to require medical support in her journey to repair the physical & emotional damage done by this violent encounter,” the page read.
“All funds raised will go directly to supporting Miracle in receiving the medical, dental, & mental health support she requires as she continues on this journey of healing.”
In the fundraiser, the organizers also called for the police officer who punched the 18-year-old to be identified and held accountable for his actions.
